Nuclear Graphite Retrieval Systems
Safe, scalable retrieval of irradiated graphite blocks for nuclear decommissioning, including damaged and difficult-to-access elements.
our mission
A uniquely demanding graphite retrieval environment
High radiation, radioactive dust, stored Wigner energy, fragile low-friction graphite blocks and restricted access make large-scale graphite core dismantling one of the most demanding challenges in nuclear decommissioning.
1 Sv/h
at the center of the reactor core
~40,000
graphite blocks per reactor core
3,000 ton
of graphite per reactor
The problem
Fragile and degraded graphite blocks can crack during retrieval, generating radioactive dust and increasing the risk of contamination.
Stored Wigner energy can be released if irradiated graphite is heated during dismantling.
Graphite’s low-friction surface, damaged blocks and varying geometries make secure and controlled handling difficult during reactor dismantling.
Our solution
Our low-damage patented vacuum gripping technology secures the block while minimizing surface damage, dust generation and secondary waste.
Our retrieval system operates at room temperature, avoiding thermal processing and reducing the risk of Wigner energy release during dismantling.
Our configurable gripping system enables controlled 3D handling in all directions, with a validated safety factor above 6 and configurations adaptable to different graphite block geometries and retrieval conditions.
